Meerwaarde van drones ook bewezen door het UAS Drone Program van de Chula Vista Police Department in California.
Beginning on October 22, 2018, with strong support from the community, the Chula Vista Police Department began deploying drones from the rooftop of the Police Department Headquarters to 911 calls and other reports of emergency incidents such as crimes in progress, fires, traffic accidents, and reports of dangerous subjects.
De afgelopen 2 jaar zijn door het Chula Vista Police Department voor ruim 4000 incidenten drones ingezet. In ruim 500 gevallen heeft die inzet tot arrestaties geleid. Door de inzet van drones was de inzet van ruim 1000 politie eenheden niet nodig. In bijna de helft van de gevallen was de drone als eerste ter plaatste van een incident, gemiddeld binnen 4 minuten.
Meerwaarde van drones steeds meer bewezen. Niet alleen in de Verenigde Staten en Australië, maar ook in Nederland gaat de Nationale Politie meer gebruik van drones maken en schaft daarvoor de komende periode nog eens 60 nieuwe drones aan.
Drones inzetten om bijvoorbeeld vermiste personen te helpen opsporen, zoals door de politie in Massachusetts, waarbij drones ook nog eens veel sneller en goedkoper kunnen worden ingezet dam bemande helikopters.
Westport police in Massachusetts has turned to drones to help in the search of a suicidal man after he made concerning comments to his family. The police department sent up a thermal camera-equipped drone and was able to find the man in a safe condition.
The drones will be used to get to a crime scene faster in hopes of catching the criminals in the act, capturing crash and crime scenes, and to provide an aerial view to officers on the ground. Once officers deploy the drones, other uses will likely be found.
The Brookhaven Police Department in Georgia is set to receive a fleet of drones as a new advanced way to responding to 911 calls. The department will also have 12 officers train to receive their FAA licenses as a part of the new unmanned aerial systems unit.
The implementation of drones will mark the first time a city outside the Chula Vista Police Department in California has introduced a similar program.
Tasmanian police in Australia are getting the latest drone tech to fight crime in the state, thanks to the government’s AUD$400,000, (US$283,640) drone program. Over the next four years, drones will slowly become an everyday tool for Tasmanian police.
The drones save a lot of manpower out walking and help in going to locations that are difficult to attend on foot. The larger drones can drop items at scenes, including a mobile telephone, transporting rope, as well as food and water and first aid equipment. It can even take an inflatable life vest if someone is in a water situation.

In the town of Linn, the Wisconsin Police department recently made the move to purchase drone technology to ensure public safety. The police now have three DJI drones in their arsenal to help out in various ways.
The Linn Police department has been able to reduce the manpower needed to respond in situations by as much as 50%. The department is using the drones for search and rescue operations, especially around the lake in town and to survey road damage. The drones are also being used to provide aerial images of buildings and infrastructure for maintenance and repairs to be completed.
During the COVID pandemic, the police have also been using the drones to patrol the town without needing manpower on the ground which has allowed social distancing to be better followed and reduce the risk of police officers getting the virus.
